Understanding Volume And Capacity

Volume refers to the amount of three-dimensional space an object or substance occupies, and it’s measured in units like cubic meters or liters. Capacity, on the other hand, usually describes how much a container can hold—most often used for liquids or pourable materials. While volume is a more general physical property, capacity is a practical application of it, typically dealing with usable space. So, your water bottle might have a volume of 1 liter, but its capacity is what tells you it can hold exactly that much water.

While volume and capacity are closely related, their formulas depend on the shape or container you’re working with. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Common Volume Formulas

  1. Cube:

V=s3V = s^3

where s is the length of a side.

  1. Rectangular Prism (box):

V=l×w×hV = l \times w \times h

where l is length, w is width, and h is height.

  1. Cylinder:

V=πr2hV = \pi r^2 h

where r is radius and h is height.

  1. Sphere:

V=43πr3V = \frac{4}{3} \pi r^3

  1. Cone:

V=13πr2hV = \frac{1}{3} \pi r^2 h

Capacity

Capacity is typically expressed in liters or milliliters, and for most containers, it uses the same formulas as volume—but focuses on the internal usable space. For example, if you’re measuring the capacity of a jug, you’d calculate its internal volume using the formula that matches its shape, then convert cubic units to liters if needed:

  • 1,000 cubic centimeters (cm³) = 1 liter
